Training Tracks & Career Pathways
Military-grade 0800-hour discipline meets high-demand civilian forestry, ecology, and technical field operations.
The "Green Zone" Indoor-to-Field Pipeline
We recognize that putting green, untrained personnel out on rugged, active winter burn scars is a massive safety and insurance liability. That is why our technical training curriculum is structured as a 30-day indoor "Green Zone" training campus footprint during initial onboarding.
While veterans complete basic safety and module training during morning shifts, afternoon hours are locked into specialized track instruction—funding FAA Part 107 commercial licensing exams, NWCG certifications, and greenhouse management through localized bridge capital before full field deployment.
The Bench: Weekly Simulators & Propagation Labs
To maintain high morale, keep waiting lists engaged, and build zero-cost operational readiness, the VRP Bench operates a weekly modular meetup. Incoming veterans sign in as active program participants, transforming standard wait times into rigorous pre-season preparation.
UAV Simulator & Part 107 Ground School
Bench members train weekly on desktop flight simulators guided by project leads and advisors. Participants build muscle memory and master FAA aeronautical regulations, qualifying through demonstrated simulator proficiency and practice exam benchmarks.
Weekly Nursery & Propagation Labs
Concurrent weekly meetups focusing on native seed cleaning, stratification science, and greenhouse management. Open to all bench members to ensure hands-on ecological engagement from day one.
Initial Onboarding: Basic Safety Baseline
Required for all crew members before stepping onto any active work site or hill operation.
OSHA 10-Hour General Industry or Construction Safety
Foundational instruction covering hazard recognition, slips/trips/falls, electrical safety, and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards.
First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
Standardized multi-hour certification ensuring every crew member can respond immediately to medical emergencies, trauma, and environmental injuries in remote settings.
Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) & Daily Briefings
Mandatory site-specific safety orientation teaching participants how to actively participate in morning tailgates, identify changing site risks, and enforce the "Stop Work Authority" protocol.
Basic PPE Compliance & Inspection
Hands-on training on fitting, inspecting, and maintaining mandatory site gear, including ANSI-rated eye and ear protection, leather gloves, hard hats, and logger boots.

Program Career Pathway Examples
Trainee A (Chris): The Ground Sawyer to High-Tech Drone Pilot Loop
- Spring Training: Chris enrolls in the spring cohort on the grant-sponsored stipend, focusing heavily on ground sawyer felling, chainsaw safety, and wildland fireline construction.
- Early Summer Community Work: Joins the mobile crew at Waterloo Park for free local wildland fire defense projects, clocking clearing windows to protect rural homes.
- Late Summer Paid Fireline: Promotes to active fire suppression and fuels reduction subcontracts through Cascadia Forestry Solutions LLC, earning $24.50/hr on commercial burn zones.
- Autumn Administrative Gate: As seasonal contracts freeze, Chris hits his contract limits. Because he maintained a flawless safety record on his Ledger, he qualifies for the Up-Skilling Loop.
- Winter Return to Training: Transitions back onto the grant training stipend to upgrade his skills, moving into the winter classroom track to master commercial aerial drone mapping, thermal sensors, and precision burn-scar evaluation.
Trainee B (Marcus): The Hillside Operator to Controlled-Environment Nursery Lead
- Winter Entry & Propagation: Marcus, managing physical limitations from service-connected injuries, enters the winter module on a grant stipend, focusing on native plant propagation, seed-saving science, and greenhouse management.
- Spring Community Work: Coordinates logistics for free urban-forestry re-planting projects around Linn County, managing native seedling staging without running heavy hillside machinery.
- Summer Paid Subcontracts: Cascadia LLC secures a watershed remediation contract; Marcus steps into paid contract work at $24.50/hr, tracking seedling survival rates and soil data.
- The Transition Gate: After hitting contract caps, his inventory and scheduling excellence lands him a direct hire by our commercial nursery partner as a permanent, full-time Greenhouse Operations Lead.
Trainee C (Sarah): The Multi-Track Technical Leader
- Spring Baseline: Sarah joins the project, quickly passing foundational sawyer safety and basic drone flight hours while serving on free community fuel-reduction crews at Waterloo Park.
- Summer Field Operations: Transitions to a paid field slot at $24.50/hr. High Merit Ledger scores earn her the role of temporary Assistant Crew Lead during multi-acre land clearing subcontracts.
